JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — The City of Jackson is looking to tackle two challenges at once — housing and workforce growth — as part of the new a new designed to help younger Michiganders buy newly constructed homes.
Qualified participants of the Build in Jackson program will also have access to the Jackson Talent Package in year one, which focuses on strengthening community engagement and connections. Chamber Community Growth Fellow Alexie Milukhin says this program is designed to help young Michiganders turn the American Dream into a reality.

“This has been a cornerstone of the American Dream, and it still is. When people are surveyed across the nation and in Michigan, they still say that home ownership is core to them thinking about building a future,” Milukhin said.
The plan works in connection with the city’s 100 Homes program and will offer qualified participants $40,000 to $60,000 in down payment assistance toward a new home.
Jackson Grant Coordinator Cory Mays says when multiple incentives are combined, the support can add up.

“So, you’re up to 50 right there, you’re going to apply for the extra $10,000 in down payment assistance from the State Housing Development Authority, from MSHDA, then you’re up to
$60,000,” Mays said. “And then we’re not even talking about the new incentives that the Chamber is going to put into the pie.”
Milukhin says bringing in a younger demographic isn’t just about having a home. She says access to amenities within walking distance and networking opportunities all play a role in where people choose to live.

Mays says even small numbers of new homeowners can make a real difference in Jackson.
“One house, one new home in Jackson makes a difference. Five new homes makes a difference,” Mays said. “But then you start talking about a program in the Chamber that maybe offers assistance to five, 10, 15, 20 additional families. All of that makes a difference. It is a significant impact.”
Mays says the first group of applicants will set the tone for the program, and if successful, leaders will look to expand the plan as the Drive Jackson initiative evolves.
